Surigao del Sur

Surigao del Sur is a province of the Philippines located in the CARAGA region in Mindanao. Its capital is Tandag City and borders Surigao del Norte to the north, Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur to the west, and Davao Oriental to the south.

“Shangri-La by the Pacific”

Old folks still like to recount how some Visayan fishermen, forced by strong currents in what is now Surigao Strait, sought refuge in one of the huts somewhere in the province. The locals or Mamanwas thought the fisherman wanted to take the hut by force or surigao. This term was given the prefix esuria and surigao was formed. In time it was shortened to Surigao.

GETTING THERE

By Air: There are daily flights from Manila to Butuan City, where the nearest airport is located.

By Land: From Davao City’s Ecoland terminal, take a bus bound for Mangagoy (Bislig). From Butuan Integrated Bus Terminal in Butuan City (Agusan del Norte), there are buses that go directly to Mangagoy (Bislig). From San Franz (Agusan del Sur) there are also buses and vans bound for Mangagoy (Bislig).

By Sea: Nearest port is Lipata (Surigao del Norte) with ferries running to and fro Manila, Cebu and Liloan (Southern Leyte).

GETTING AROUND

Pedicabs are roaming in the province of Surigao del Sur. Buses ("Bachelor Express"), Vans and Jeepneys ply from Cantilan to Tandag and Surigao City on the coast-road Surigao-Tandag. Unfortunately, the connection to Surigao City is sometimes a hassle during rainy season, because cars/vans can be trapped in the mud between Adlay (Carrascal) and Claver.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?

The Province of Surigao del Sur was created as the 56th Philippine province on June 19, 1960 by virtue of RA 2786 and was formally organized or separated from its mother province, Surigao del Norte, on September 18, 1960.  The aborigines of Surigao del Sur were a conglomeration and mixture of different racial types, namely: Mandaya, Mamanua, Mansaka and Manobo.  Surigao formerly, was extended from what is known as Agusan.
